Any cyber threat is an untenable risk factor for any physician

Cyber threats are a risk you can’t afford to take.

Medical clinics are prime targets for cybercriminals. Phishing e-mails, viruses, malware — the risks are endless. One weak spot can put your clients’ confidentiality and your reputation at risk. To maximize your protection, add CyberSuite Plus to your business property and liability insurance.

What is cyberrisk insurance?

Cyberrisk insurance is protection designed to help businesses deal with the consequences of a cyber security incident such as a computer attack, cyber extortion, personal data breach or computer fraud.

Physicians handle highly sensitive information, yet many underestimate their vulnerability to cyber threats, mistakenly believing that only large companies are targeted. But there are cybersecurity solutions specially designed for professionals. These solutions offer real support and guidance in the event of an incident, particularly for major threats such as social engineering.

When a cyberattack disrupts the daily operations of a medical clinic

Picture this:

You receive an email that looks like it’s from an appointment centre. In good faith, you click on an attachment. Within seconds, a virus is installed across your practice’s computer system. Access to patient files is blocked, data is corrupted, and the practice’s activities grind to a halt.

You have you cancel your appointments, your patients are worried, and your team is unable to carry on with their day-to-day tasks.

You feel the financial consequences, amounting to many thousands of dollars, almost immediately:

  • Loss of income: 50 appointments cancelled in two days

Q&A: Cyber attack

What is a cyberattack?

It’s a computer attack by a cybercriminal that can severely compromise your practice’s operations in many different ways, from computer damage and blocked access to data, to operating system failure, software problems and more.

Here are some common cyber threats:

Malware
Malware is software that steals, destroys or blocks the data in your company databases. Hackers may demand a ransom to restore access to your data.

Denial-of-service attacks
This is a computer attack that can, for example, prevent your clients from accessing your appointment booking portal or your online services.

Phishing
Phishing is when an unknown individual sends emails or text messages to your employees in order to commit fraud or install malware on your computers.

Viruses
Viruses can infect your computer system and perform malicious actions such as sending fraudulent emails to your clients.

How cyberrisk insurance helps

It comes into effect, supporting you from the minute your patients’ confidential data is lost, stolen or inadvertently disclosed. That data could include their files as well as sensitive personal information such as credit card, social insurance or health insurance numbers. In these situations, there’s a critical risk of identity theft. As a physician you have an obligation—almost more so than any other professional—to protect this personal data. That’s why cyberrisk insurance is so important.
